Haruo Kawaguchi (かわぐちはる Kawaguchi Haruo), shortened to Haru in the English dub, is the youngest of the three Machine Gun Brothers and the younger brother of Natsuko Kawaguchi. He uses an M60 machine gun as his weapon.

Appearance and personality[]

Haruo is a 17 year-old man and the youngest of the Kawaguchi siblings. He has short black hair and pale skin. Like his brothers, he wears the sunshade of the West Oasis Handyman Guild with the kanji for the number three (三), being the youngest brother. His mask differs from his brothers in that mask's eyes look like small blue dots inside a dark rectangular area. All three brothers wear dark purple gloves, but Akio and Haruo's gloves have one square patch on the back of the hand. Under his mercenary clothes, he wears a white shirt.

In addition, on his back he wears a banner advertising himself as a handyman (便利屋). In the anime, he adds a "Reverse" symbol on the top right (裏) to represent their new affiliation. Haruo is the most shy of the three brothers, and he speaks with a stutter.

Biography[]

Childhood[]

Haruo and his siblings grew up in Water Station 30, where Kanta Mizuno also lived. Kanta made him and his brothers do bad things such as steal from stores and bully other children. One day when Haruo was seven years old, Kanta got him and his brothers to help him steal something from a candy store. Unfortunately, Haruo and Natsuko got caught, and Haruo's parents took away his dinner for a week. Both of them got scraps from Akio and Fuyuo, and Natsuko gave her portion to Haruo.

Two years later, when Haruo and his brothers find out that Kanta has been coercing Natsuko to let him touch her breasts in return for her brothers not doing bad things, in addition to Kanta attempting to rape Natsuko, Haruo and his brothers beat up Kanta within an inch of his life.

At some point, Haruo and his brothers train as apprentices under handymen, and they become mercenaries who use machine guns, hence their namesake. Haruo uses an M60, whereas Fuyuo and Akio use an M2 Browning and M249 SAW respectively.

Mercenary work[]

Haruo always works with his two brothers when they engage in handyman work. Haruo and his brothers stick to mercenary work, but when their sister Natsuko went missing as Doronuma told them, they go search for her. They come across Desert Punk, who was also told about Natsuko's disappearance. They work together and are attacked by the cyborg soldier Nanba. Nanba manages to single out Fuyuo and use him as a hostage, carrying the large handyman as if he weighed nothing. Kanta uses a C-4 bomb to stop Nanba, and they all fall beneath the ground, revealing underground ruins.

In the ruins, they find a soldier from Natsuko's unit, confirming that she is in the ruins somewhere. As they assess their situation, Nanba attacks them once more, but Kanta leads the cyborg into a trap where Fuyuo uses his machine gun to blast Nanba away. At the same time, Haruo tries to find Natsuko but a soldier puts him at gunpoint. The soldier realizes that he is Natsuko's brother, and the two regroup with Kanta. The soldier tells them about the enemy in the ruins, and soon the enemy begins shooting at them from a distance. The enemy soldiers start surrounding them, but Haruo and his brothers shoot them down. When the enemies get back up, it is shown that they are cyborg soldiers, freaking out the brothers. To save them, Natsuko's soldier detonates all the bombs placed in the ruins, staving off the enemy.

Haruo and his brothers exit the ruins and save Natsuko from being killed by another cyborg soldier. She asks them why they are there, and they tell her about news of her disappearance, and Haruo is welcomed into the anti-government faction of the West Oasis Government (which Natsuko secretly wanted to keep her brothers out of). Some weeks later, Haruo and his siblings are summoned to check on Kaoru Kaizuka, who is in danger according to Kanta, and Haruo alerts Kosuna as well. As they walk to Kaizuka's laboratory, they discover the area burned, and Kanta reveals himself along with robot soldiers. Kanta explains that he has switched sides, and the brothers cuss him out. Haruo agrees with his two brothers that he will fight with Natsuko to the end, but Mitsuru Koidemizu manages to distract the robots with his Hulk disease, and the group flees. It is unknown where Haruo is or what his activities are during the subsequent West-South war.
